For the past 2 years we have done Beth Moore studies (James & David), which have been very worthwhile- lots of homework and digging into God’s word at home, and very full evenings together with 1 hour long teaching sessions. Undoubtedly we will do another of Beth’s studies in the future, but we think it’s time to mix it up again. One of things that we heard from you (those who studied with us last year) was that the group time around the table, for discussion, and even more so for share time & prayer was always short, and there was never enough time.
So, for our next Bible Study, we are going to work through “The SEVEN Experiment” by Jen Hatmaker. What can I say about this study (without having yet done it!)?
This study has DVD sessions that are 15-20 mins long, so there will be lots more time around our tables for connecting. This study has a workbook with some homework, but not nearly at the level that Beth Moore has. This study is practical. It’s a study you can do with your roommates, husbands, friends, & whole family. It’s a hands on experiment to put seven key areas of life through something of a ‘fast’ to allow room for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives. The 7 areas are: clothing, spending, waste, food, possessions, media & stress. This study isn’t about guilt, rule-following, or pat answers. This study isn’t about comparing ourselves to others. It is simply a way to hold up ‘our stuff’ before God and allow him room to speak into the ways we live and the choices we make. In the words of Jen Hatmaker, “Jesus, may there be less of me and my junk, and more of You and Your Kingdom.”
If you find this a little scary, come and talk to me. Since coming across this material, I have that little knot in the pit of my stomach that is somewhere between excitement and fear (kind of that feeling when you crest the top of the hill on a roller coaster, and begin your free fall…) I have never done any kind of ‘fast’ before, and I do feel a little nervous- mostly because I know God WILL work in my life – He is faithful. So I am excited, and nervous, and mostly full of hope, that God will continue the good work that He has already begun, not just in me, but also in you. Let’s do it!
